TIPS FOR
TRAVELING WITH DOGS
We offer the
following travel tips to minimize the risk to your pets as they make their
way to Eugene. Check back frequently as we’ll update this
with suggestions we receive.
- ALWAYS walk your dog on a leash. This
includes rest stops and hotels (even the show venue).
- Use only very sturdy travel crates for
shipping.
- Ensure that all door latches and other
closures are secure.
- Install zip ties, duct tape, and/or other
secondary security mechanisms on the door and the crate sides. (You may
have to drill a few holes to install these.)
- If flying, get a non-stop flight if at all
possible.
- If traveling by car, do not leave your
vehicle unattended with the dog(s) in it.
- Maintain eye contact with the cage whenever
possible.
- If flying, make your way through security
and go directly to the gate. Watch the loading process. React
immediately by notifying airline staff if you see a problem. Total
vigilance is key!
- Make friends with travel personnel.
Shipping a dog is always stressful. Permitting yourself to be grumpy
when dealing with airline or hotel staff will not help if you ever need
their assistance. Most of them will go the extra yard if you smile and
explain that you’re traveling with a pet.

- Another crate security precaution that can
be used is to get a length of chain (a large choke chain will work) and
two double ended snaps. Snap one end of the chain to the side grate on
the Vari-kennel. Then bring the chain across the door and snap the other
end to the side of the front door, opposite the latch. The chain should
be tight. This way, even if the door somehow gets unlatched, it will not
open.
